Company History
The idea for a commercial website that gathered in-depth information about
online education and distance learning opportunities was conceived in
1997 by a group of university professors, web designers and information
technology specialists. There were no online search engines at the time
that focused on gathering data about online classes and degree programs
as well as continuing education, skills training, and certification programs.
There were also few opportunities for online colleges and universities
to get their message out to the rest of the world - marketing their programs
to potential online learners was a difficult endeavor. Ed-X was seen as
an "educational exchange" that would unify online college content with
potential learners, wherever they were located in the world.
Ed-X LLC was formally incorporated in Austin, Texas (USA) in 1998.
The company is privately held and has strategic development agreements
with companies in Holland, Germany, and Great Britain. Ed-X currently
hosts the online education content site, Ed-X: The Distance Learning Channel,
and has developed software-based products that populate "shell" Learning
Management Systems ("LMS") as well as integrate disparate registration
and information databases at online colleges into the Ed-X exchange network.
Client Information
Since the company's inception in 1998, Ed-X has represented numerous universities
with distance learning content, online colleges, and private learning
content providers. Ed-X has assisted in the marketing of distance learning
programs for institutions from around the world including: Connecticut
State University, Golden Gate University, Herriott-Watt University (UK),
National University, University of Phoenix, Kaplan College, Keller Graduate
School of Management, Syracuse University, Regis University, University
of Texas, Florida State University, University of North Carolina, University
of Wisconsin - Platte, and Murdoch University of Australia.
Ed-X has filed several patents on its innovative agent-based exchange
software. Agent-based exchanges have been developed as working demonstrations
for the U.S. Army's "eArmyU" project, the U.S. Air Force Materiel Command's
Knowledge Management initiative, and for organizations such as the Professional
Photographers of America and regional training authorities in the Netherlands.
Ed-X always seeks to improve its service to the distance learning community.

Ed-X Products
Ed-X has developed a complete online education solution for corporations,
governmental organizations, non-profits, and content providing online
colleges.
Ed-X: The Distance Learning Channel™. Ed-X's online search engine
and comprehensive database of distance education opportunities (including
online degree and certificate programs, skills training, and non-credit
classes) was first released in 1998. The Ed-X website serves as an informational
"e-source" for learners to find distance learning and online educational
opportunities from around the globe.
Ed-X Online Education Gateways. Ed-X Gateways can link the Ed-X
database of online education and distance learning opportunities to the
websites of corporations and other organizations. The database, which
is updated weekly, can populate 'empty' Learning Management System (LMS)
shells with SCORM compliant or other accredited training and educational
opportunities. This, in turn, reduces the cost of building content for
organizations and makes LMS software useful.
Ed-X Exchange Agent™. Ed-X has developed a series of software agents
that can pull data from a variety of disparate databases into an Ed-X
exchange controller server. The controller server can update data (including
seat count, financial transactions, course information, articulation agreements,
and transcript information) in real time from online colleges or content
providers and transmit requested data to an end user's web browser. The
agents are non-obtrusive and do not require a rewrite of the underlying
data structure. They can also be used to pull SCORM compliant courseware
segments into a cohesive, customized learning module on a real time basis.
Ed-X Knowledge Information Exchange™. Ed-X's Knowledge Information
Exchange ("KIE") system is a complete exchange system that unifies disparate
databases using Ed-X's proprietary software agents. Formal and Informal
knowledge can be retrieved from completely dissimilar database applications,
delivered to an Ed-X KIE server and forwarded on to a KIE user's browser.
The KIE system is bilateral so that queries and updates (seat count, tuition
cost, knowledge management information) can be written back to the database
without changing the underlying database structure. The Knowledge Information
Exchange system offers governments and large organizations to capture,
organize and deliver knowledge management in a flexible and easily implementable
system.
